Director of the institute Adil Garibov told APA that it is difficult to give detailed information about the ionizing radioactive emission in Azerbaijan, because the country’s territory has not been studied thoroughly.

“This process must be realized with the participation of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. This issue was several times discussed by the state commission on relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency. No unanimous decision has been made yet. This issue must be raised at the government level, funds must be allocated. The International Atomic Energy Agency can also support Azerbaijan. We must send a questionnaire for this purpose. This is very important. Such studies are significant both from strategic and sanitary and hygienic aspects. Special equipment should be purchased for this purpose,” he said.

Adil Garibov said the locally contaminated areas in Azerbaijan are mainly in the territory of oil and gas extraction plants in Absheron.

“Though this radioactivity is above the background level, it does not fall under the international classification. The stress factor can also have an impact on the people. Therefore, we have raised an issue for clearance of those territories. It is not accidental that the order issued by President and the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers regarding the ecological recovery of Absheron region envisage the elimination of pollution in these territories,” he said.
