Hate crimes continue to be a serious problem across the OSCE region, concludes a report titled “Hate Crimes in the OSCE Region – Incidents and Responses”, and released by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) today, APA reports. The report published on occasion of the International Day for Tolerance, is based on the analysis of data received from the 33 participating States that responded to ODIHR’s information request, as well as reports of hate crime incidents from 93 non-governmental organizations.

According to the report, which covers the year 2010, there were numerous instances of intimidation, threats, vandalism, arson, assault and murder, targeting individuals or groups because of their ethnicity, religion or other status.

Azerbaijan authorities also presented the information to the OSCE/ODIHR. According to the information, only one crime was recorded in Azerbaijan in 2010 because of ethnicity, nationality and race. Such fact has not occurred in 2009. By comparison, 19 such crimes occurred in Georgia last year. The number of such crimes is thousands in the European countries, mainly Sweden and Finland.
