Baku hosts workshop on oil pollution damage

The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Emergency Situations and OSCE Office in Baku. In his welcoming speech, First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations, Lieutenant-General Rafael Mirzayev emphasized the importance of serious approach to oil pollution incidents: â€œIntensification of oil and gas production on the Caspian Sea increased the risk of oil and chemical pollution of the seaâ€. Mirzayev also emphasized the importance of cooperation with the foreign oil and gas production companies in this field.

Head of the OSCE Office in Baku Koray Targay also addressed the workshop participants: â€œThe disasters caused by oil spill in different places of the world reminded us about the ecological and economic consequences of such incidents, which once again prove that we need in more useful and coordinated measures during the emergency situations causing by oil spillâ€.

The ambassador noted that the OSCE Office is closely working with the Government of Azerbaijan and is ready to give sustainable support and expert opinion in providing oil pollution preparedness.

After the opening ceremony, the workshop will be continued in three sessions: â€œThe status of the plan on providing oil pollution preparedness in Azerbaijanâ€, â€œThe current status of the implementation of framework convention (Tehran Convention) on protection of environment of the Caspian Sea in national level, international cooperation experience in the field of sea security and protection of sea environmentâ€ and â€œInternational regimes for claims and compensation for oil spill on the seaâ€.

Representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, State Maritime Administration, State Oil Company and international experts attend the workshop.

Azerbaijan joined the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation. Azerbaijan and other littoral states signed the Protocol on regional cooperation against the oil pollution on the Caspian Sea.
