Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. The final variant of the Radon Distribution Map of Azerbaijan is ready, chief of the department for gamma-ray spectrometry of geological environment of Geology Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Chingiz Aliyev told APA. He said the map drawn within the framework of the project implemented jointly with the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) will be presented in a few days.

Chingiz Aliyev said among the CIS countries the map had been first drawn in Azerbaijan.
“The map covers the whole territory of the country, with the exception of Karabakh and Nakhchivan. We intend to study the level of the radon gas in Nakhchivan in future. In Azerbaijan the norm of the radon gas in old buildings is 200 Bq/m3, 100 Bq/m3 in new buildings. In some territories the level of this gas is above normal. It depends on geological factors. These territories are mainly the central part of the Greater Caucasus, Talish. Due to the active faults in these territories various kinds of gases, including radon outcrop. It must be studied. The level of gas in other territories is normal,” he said.

The studies were started within the framework of the Swiss National Science Foundation’s “Program on establishment of radon cadastre for Azerbaijan and Slovenia, diagnostics through usage of Swiss method and experience”. Sanitarians, epidemiologists from Switzerland and Health Ministry are participating in the project. The studies envisage influence of radon on environment, especially on human body. Gammadata instrument has been installed in Baku and other cities and settlements.
