About 5000 consumptives identified in Azerbaijan last year

The conference was organized by the Lung Diseases Institute of the Azerbaijan’s Health Ministry, USAID and the Association of Pulmonology. According to APA, representatives of the relevant government agencies of Azerbaijan, the Global Fund To Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, the World Health Organization, experts from Turkey, Georgia, Russia and Ukraine attend the conference.

In his keynote speech, director of the Lung Diseases Institute Elchin Mammadbeyov said statistics 2010 showed that about 5000 consumptives were identified in Azerbaijan last year. The number of identified infection cases increased 56.2%, but treatment was successful in 62% of the cases. “These figures show that the number of infected people has increased, but control over the treatment of ill people has also been strengthened. Anti-TB drugs were comprehensively purchased in 2011. Reference laboratory for TB-identification received certificate of quality in Borstel, Germany”.

Mammadbeyov said comparing nine months of 2010 and nine months of 2011 the number of biopsies in the Reference Laboratory increased by four times. He said the second-rate regional laboratories were being established in the country. There is such a laboratory in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, construction of bacteriological laboratories has been completed in Guba, Masalli and Zagatala, laboratory is being built in Gandja.

It was noted that “Strategy for Combating Tuberculosis for 2011-2015” and “Action plan” had been adopted in Azerbaijan. The implementation of the project on treatment of drug-resistant patients started in August, 2008. 791 drug-resistant patients have been involved in treatment.
