Tahir Mammadli: Studies have shown that 10-magnitude earthquake may hit Azerbaijan

Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. There are 79 active earthquake sources in Azerbaijan, chief of seismology and geodynamics department of the Republic Seismological Service Center Tahir Mammadli said, APA reports. He said the seismic regionalization map adopted in 1991 is not right.
“Studies have shown that 10-magnitude earthquake may hit Azerbaijan. Shamakhy-Ismayilli, Gabala are considered 10-magnitude zones. Lankaran is shown as 8-magnitude zone, while it is 9-magnitude zone. Lowland zone is 7-8-magnitude zone. The territory of Nakhchivan needs additional studies. There are few studies concerning the territory of the Autonomous Republic. According to our studies, there are no active earthquake sources in Karabakh,” he said.

Mammadli said the seismic results obtained concerning Baku coincide with the previous results.
“This area is shown as 8-magnitude zone in the previous map,” he said.
