Baku. Nijat Mustafayev – APA-Economics. Children under 18 account for 29% of he population in Azerbaijan, said the State Statistical Committee.

According to the statistics, the country registered 48 400 births during January-April, of which 53.4% were male and 46.6% female.

The average life expectancy of children born last year is believed to be 72.6, including 69.79 years for men and 75.4 years for women.

The most popular name for girls were Fatima, Nermin, Zehra, Nermin, and Nuray and the most popular names chosen by parents for boys were Mahammad, Ali, Huseyn, Murad, and Nihad.

As at 1 April, 4 500 pediatricians work at 591 child care policlinics, outpatient clinics and hospitals.

Children are mainly interested in football, chess, athletics, free-style wrestling, basketball and table tennis.

There are 1 612 preschools, 4 550 day schools, 108 vocational schools, 60 technical vocational schools and 48 universities.

Under a decree of the head of state, the year 2009 is the year of child in Azerbaijan.
