Although Azerbaijan accounts for only 0.11% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the country has emerged as one of the true climate leaders, said Curt Garrigan, Chief of the Sustainable Urban Development Section for the Environment and Development Division of UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), during a panel discussion at the National Urban Forum held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.
He noted that Azerbaijan has committed to reducing emissions by 40% by 2050 and has increased its ambition: “This is quite an ambitious target. One of the key objectives is to understand how local authorities and local actions can contribute to achieving these targets. This is relevant for all countries in the region and worldwide. But the main issue is to think about how to integrate different sectors, how to strengthen multi-level governance, and how to develop and implement those solutions jointly.”
“The main challenge always arises in terms of financing. That is, it is not enough to simply identify the measures that can help achieve the targets. At the same time, it is necessary to create an environment—both at the national and local levels—that enables their implementation,” he added.
