An environmental approach has been incorporated into the master plan of the White City project, Elena Chernova, special projects manager at Baku White City said during a panel discussion held as part of the 2nd Azerbaijan International Investment Forum, APA reports.
She said that the White City project is part of a broader state program and that government agencies, international urban planning consultants and local experts have cooperated in implementing the project.
According to Chernova, an environmental approach was taken as the basis for repurposing the area, which was previously a heavily polluted site in the center of Baku Bay.
“The environmental vision was incorporated into the master plan from the very beginning. This includes climate-responsive urban planning, integration of the project into the existing surrounding urban environment and alignment with the transport strategy,” she noted.
She said the project envisages promoting the use of public transport, reducing car use and emissions, creating green spaces and giving priority to pedestrians.
Chernova also said that green buildings are being constructed as part of the project and that a number of business buildings have been certified under BREEAM standards. According to her, this initiative is now also being continued in residential buildings.
