Flood incidents in Azerbaijan have increased more than 80 times over the past 10 years, said Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Umayra Taghiyeva during a panel discussion at the "III National Urban Forum" held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.
She noted that the duration of droughts has increased by 80%: “The number of days with temperatures above 30 degrees has increased 6 times. Forest fires have increased 5 times. Strong winds exceeding a speed of 25 meters per second have increased 12 times. Rainfall events have increased 6 times. This means that we are in strong need of an advanced early warning system.”
U. Taghiyeva stated that the volume of water entering Azerbaijan has decreased by 30%: “For example, in April of this year, the amount of precipitation that fell in Baku in one day exceeded the average three-month norm and, unfortunately, resulted in the death of two people. Another example is from January 18, 2019, when a wind blowing at a speed of 40 meters per second caused damage to infrastructure in Baku. Following a timely warning, the government decided to suspend classes in schools on risky days. The roof of one school in Baku collapsed at a time when students would normally be outside. At that time, joint efforts were made between government agencies to prevent possible human casualties."
