Baku – APA-Economics. Smartphones will account for the majority of global mobile phone shipments in 2013, two years earlier than previously expected, according to a new report from IHS iSuppli, APA reports citing AllThingsD.

It estimates that smartphones will account for 54 percent of the total market next year, up from 46 percent in 2012 and 35 percent in 2011.

The growing number of low-cost smartphones driving demand in emerging markets and a wider number of models available caused the market researcher to upgrade its forecast from a year ago, when it forecast smartphones would only gain a majority of the market by 2015.

The share of feature phones is now expected to fall to 28 percent in 2016, and a third type of phone, the entry-level and ultra-low-cost handset, will take 4.2 percent of the market in 2016, versus 14 percent this year.
