According to demands of “Procedure of certification of wheeled vehicles, their equipment and parts”, confirmed by the State Committee on Standardization, Metrology & Patents of Azerbaijan, in order to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers, from May 1, 2012, all the vehicles imported to the country must have at least one air bag. And brake system must be a type of ABS. The demands do not concern full transmitting motor vehicles. The cars, which do not meet these demands, will not be imported and produced.

Chairman of State Customs Committee Aydin Aliyev noted that, firstly, import of VAZ-2107 would be banned, thereafter VAZ-2114 and VAZ-2115: “this process will be implemented stage-by-stage. It can be stopped in October. Thereafter only modified cars will be imported. Import of VAZ-2114 and VAZ-2115 can last until October”.

Note that, as of the beginning of 2012, more than 1 mln motor vehicles have been registered in Azerbaijan. Of these, 400,000 or 40% were motor vehicles with lower level of safety. Last year, though the number of road accidents decreased in comparison with 2010, more than 50% of the accidents were committed by motor vehicles. Analysis of accidents from technical point of view shows that the main reasons of fatal results are related to absence of air bags and brake system.
