Haji Mammadov, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for committing particularly serious crimes, committed suicide on Dec. 3 by hanging himself with a bed-sheet in a cell of a specialized medical facility of the Azerbaijani Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Service, where he had been undergoing treatment, the Penitentiary Service said in response to APA’s inquiry.
“Haji Mammadov was diagnosed with “disseminated lung tuberculosis in the phase of decay”, as well as diabetes and central right lung cancer,” said the Penitentiary Service.
The scene was examined with the participation of a forensic expert. During the examination, a note was found, in which the deceased expressed apology to his relatives and employees of the facility he was kept in, added the Penitentiary Service.
Baku City Prosecutor’s Office initiated a criminal case on the incident, the investigation is currently ongoing.
