International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is aware of the reports of undeclared goods passing through Lachin and doesn't support such activities, Ilaha Huseynova, head of the PR department of the ICRC's representative office in Azerbaijan told APA.
She stressed that such products were not found in any ICRC owned vehicle: "All humanitarian cargoes are checked by the customs authorities of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, drivers of 4 vehicles rented and temporarily affixed with the ICRC emblem tried to transfer commercial cargoes in their vehicles without informing us. These persons were not employees of the ICRC and service contracts with them were immediately terminated.
The work we do along the Lachin road is only of a humanitarian nature. These activities, which have enabled the medical evacuation of over 600 patients and the delivery of necessary supplies to health centers, including food and baby food, should be allowed to continue. Humanitarian activities are always carried out with the consent of the parties and have a positive impact on the lives of thousands of people."
Note, the State Border Service has today issued a statement that attempts were made to smuggle various types of contraband in vehicles belonging to the ICRC on the Lachin road.
