Farid Safarli, imprisoned in Iran, was returned to Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan's State Security Service and Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a joint press release on this, APA reports.

In accordance with the instructions of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Safarli Farid Gabil, a citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan, who was detained in the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2023, was transferred from the Islamic Republic of Iran on 18.01.2025 and returned to Azerbaijan within the framework of international legal cooperation and mutual procedure.

Farid Safarli was reunited with his family after undergoing a medical examination.

Necessary measures will be taken to protect the rights and interests of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan outside the country.

Recall that Farid Safarli, a 27-year-old Azerbaijani student at the University of Jena in Germany, went to Tehran on February 20, 2023 to see his girlfriend, a doctor who had completed his internship at the same university.

Although F. Safarli was supposed to return to Germany on March 5, he did not return. Since March 4, Farid's phone has been turned off and contact with him has been completely lost.

Later, it became known that he had been charged with espionage by Iranian official bodies.

During a court hearing held on July 19, 2023, the charge of "espionage" brought against Farid Safarli was replaced with the charge of "intent to espionage".

By the court's verdict, he was sentenced to 2 and a half years in prison.
