A report marking the anniversary of the crash of an AZAL passenger plane operating the Baku–Grozny flight near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan has been aired on the Euronews television channel, APA reports.

The Euronews coverage reflects Azerbaijan’s position on the crash, testimonies from survivors of the incident, and other related issues.

It is noted that, based on the results of the investigation and witness statements, the President of Azerbaijan has firmly emphasized Russia’s responsibility for the incident. Subsequently, the President of Russia acknowledged his country’s role in the tragedy.

“The heroism of the pilots who lost their lives in the incident prevented a greater loss of life,” the report says.

It was also emphasized that one day after the crash, Azerbaijani officials told Euronews that, despite requests from the pilots, Russia did not allow the Azerbaijani aircraft to land at any of its airports, forcing the plane to fly over the Caspian Sea toward Kazakhstan.

“Approximately one year after the incident, the Russian President admitted that Russia’s air defence systems were targeting Ukrainian drones over Grozny and, as a result, bore responsibility for shooting down the Azerbaijani aircraft. Compensation was offered,” the report notes.

Recall that one year has passed since the Embraer 190-100 IGW passenger aircraft belonging to Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), operating the scheduled J2-8243 flight from Baku to Grozny and registered under tail number 4K-AZ65, crashed near Aktau Airport in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

As a result of the crash, two flight crew members (the captain and first officer), a senior flight attendant, and 35 passengers were killed.
