Court mitigates sentence of two Azerbaijanis who participated in battles against US and allied troops

Baku. Ramil Mammadli – APA. Shirvan Appeals Court considered the appeal of 13 Azerbaijanis, who participated in the battles against the US and allied troops in Pakistan and Afghanistan, APA reports. Kamran Akbarov presided over the hearing. The court partially granted the appeal of the prisoners. Under the decision of the court, the sentence of Kangarli Araz Ayrim and Isayev Telman Safa was commuted. Their sentence has been reduced to a year and a half.

On October 12, 2009, the Court of Grave Crimes sentenced Shakir Khanbutov to a year and a half, Araz Kangarli to 2 years and 6 months, Telman Isayev to 2 years and 6 months, Tural Sultanov to 2 years, Jahangir Bagirov, Eyyub Zeynalov, Seymur Ahadov, Emil Mirzayev, Jeyhun Sadigov, Shahin Mukhtarov, Kabir Valibayov, Rovshan Pashayev and Vugar Khalilov to 6 months in jail. Except Khalilov, the persons sentenced to 6 months were released from the court room as the term of their sentence had expired. Khalilov was released on October 29.

The defendants faced charges under articles 12.1 (implementation of the criminal law concerning the persons who have committed a crime out of border of the Azerbaijan Republic), 279.1 (creation of armed formations or groups, which are not provided by the legislation of the Azerbaijan Republic, and also participation in their creation and activity, supplying them by weapon, ammunition, explosives, military engineering or military equipment), 318.1 (crossing of protected frontier of the Azerbaijan Republic without established documents or outside of check point of frontier), 318.2 (the act provided by article 318.1 of the present Code, committed on preliminary arrangement by group of persons or organized group either with application of violence or with threat of its application) of the Criminal Code.
