Deputy Minister: We intend to transfer the jails situated in the center of Baku to the regions

According to chief of the Penitentiary Service, these facilities fail to fulfill their functions completely in the center of the city.

Nazim Alakbarov said first of all the facilities, where women and minors are held, will be transferred.
â€œApproximately 7ha area has been allotted for the womenâ€™s detention facility near Baku jail. We plan to construct a new facility there. Estimate documents are being prepared. Following this, Security Group, Convoy Party of the Penitentiary Service, jails #1, 6 and 15 will be transferred,â€ he said.

Deputy Minister mentioned that a part of Baku jail was opened in May, the second part is expected to open by the yearend.
â€œIn connection with this, detention facility #3 in Shuvalan will be closed. After that, the jail, which is being constructed in Shaki, will be opened in the middle of 2010. Moreover, detention facility will be constructed in Shaki,â€ he said.

According to Nazim Alakbarov, new jails are being constructed in Lankaran, Kurdamir and Ganja.
â€œThey are expected to open in 2012-2013,â€ he said.
