Ombudsperson Elmira Suleymanova attends international conference in Tbilisi

Baku - APA. Azerbaijanâ€™s Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanova attended a conference in Tbilisi organized by Penal Reform International on October 1-2.

The conference titled â€œPrevention of Torture in South Caucasusâ€ was attended by NGO representatives, experts from international organizations and the UK, Czech Republic, Estonia, Slovenia, Croatia and other countries, government officials and media representatives from Georgia, and human right activists from Azerbaijan.

The conference discussed issues related to the concept of torture, the mandate of the national preventive mechanisms under Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture, the world experience in the prevention of torture, other ill-treatment, etc.

Participants reviewed the situation in South Caucasus countries, and hold discussions. Suleymanova made a report on"Activity of the Human Rights Commissioner of the Azerbaijan Republic as a national preventive mechanism to prevent torture."

The Ombudsman said that the situation in the prison system and police forces of Azerbaijan in recent years has improved.
