According to the statement, a young man named Ilgar , 36, has been detained by the police after faking his own abduction to get money from his family on September 18.

He called his family saying the kidnapper demanded $36 000 in ransom to release him alive. He told the family that he had to deliver the money to kidnappers alone and he could be killed if somebody followed him.

His father and sister delivered $30 000 to him in a pre-arranged remote area for his release.

As his father had reported the incident to police, Ilgar was arrested by a special police group after getting marked money bills to deliver the “kidnappers”.

On September 20, he faced charges of swindling (Article 178.3.2) and giving false information knowingly (Article 296.2).

In his testimony, Ilgar Aghayev admitted that he was not kidnapped but he orchestrated the fake kidnapping to get money from his family and pay his debts.

He was sent to pretrial prison on September 21 after a court passed a decision to launch investigation into the case.
