National Security Ministry and Prosecutor Generalâ€™s Office issue joint statement

As a result of the operations carried out by Azerbaijanâ€™s National Security Ministry and Prosecutor Generalâ€™s Office, the members of the organized gang engaged in smuggling between Azerbaijan and Russia were rendered harmless, 110 boxes with precious things worth $1 million were confiscated.

Russian citizen Yunus Bedigov and Khachmaz region residents â€“ Shirzal Fatullayev, his sons Firuz and Natig, Adalat Dadashov, Jamo and Elman Israfilov brothers attempted to smuggle the boxes with precious things from Azerbaijan to Russia. On September 17, 2009, Yunu Bedigov, Adalat Dadashov, Shirzal and Natif Fatullayevs, Firuz were detained while attempting to load the boat with the precious things. Other members of the gang Jamo and Elman Israfilovs, who were controlling the coastline in a Honda motorcycle, were also detained.

The members of the organized gang resisted to the National Security Ministryâ€™s Special Unit â€œGartalâ€. Natif Fatullayev was rendered harmless by response fire, Yunus Bedigov was wounded and hospitalized.

Criminal case has been launched on articles 29, 206.4 (attempt to smuggle by an organized gang), 228.1 (illegal purchase, transfer, selling, storage, transportation or carrying of fire-arms, accessories to it, supplies (except for the smooth-bore hunting weapon and ammunition to it), explosives), 315.2 (resistance or use of violence towards the representative of authority) and 318.2 (illegal crossing the state border) of the Criminal Code. Investigation is underway.
