Human Rights Commissioner receives Miklos Haraszti

Baku â€“ APA. Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanov received Miklos Haraszti, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Human Rights Commissionerâ€™s press service told APA. Head of OSCE Office in Baku Ali Bilge Cankorel also attended the meeting. Haraszti gave information about his mandate that consists of protecting and supporting freedom of media in the region. The Human Rights Commissioner said protection of human rights and freedoms, as well as freedom of expression had become priority in Azerbaijan, fundamental changes were being made to improve media. Miklos Haraszti said OSCE concerned itself with the state of journalists, protection of media rights in Azerbaijan, expressed concern over the arrest of media representatives, young bloggers.
Elmira Suleymanova underlined that the Human Rights Commissioner focused attention on the protection of media rights, freedom of expression and controlled rude attitude towards journalists. It was noted that the Human Rights Commissioner had appealed to the related bodies concerning the application of alternative methods to reproach media representatives who violated law and the release of the imprisoned journalists.
Asked about the arrest of Adnan Hajizadeh and Emin Milli, the Human Rights Commissioner said she had focused her attention on the problem.
Ali Bilge Cankorel asked the Human Rights Commissioner to support the adoption of the bill on defamation.
