Administration of two jails punished in Azerbaijan

It was noted at the meeting on the first half of 2009 of Justice Ministryâ€™s Penitentiary Service, public affairs department of the Penitentiary Service told APA. It was also noted that the administration and some employees of jails #6 and 12 were punished due to the shortcomings in their activity.

The draft law on â€œDeclaring amnesty in connection with Novruz holidayâ€ submitted by MP Mehriban Aliyeva was adopted in the parliament on March 17. The act of amnesty was implemented within four months. The act of amnesty was applied to the persons posing no public threat, women imprisoned for less grievous crime, persons, who committed crime under 18, disabled people of the 1st and 2nd group, men reached 60, persons having underage children and disabled children of the 1st and 2nd group.

Moreover, the act of amnesty was applied to the women, whose imprisonment would expire within a year and men, whose imprisonment would expire within six months, women, whose custodial restraint would expire within 2 years and men, whose custodial restraint would expire within a year, all persons sentenced to correctional labor, persons sentenced to fine punishment, persons, who got suspended sentence.

The amnesty was applicable to approximately 9000 people, 1700 of them were released.
