Aim of organized armed gang that attempted to trespass Azerbaijan border was to go to Pankisi gorge of Georgia

The members of the gang intended to leave for Pankisi gorge through Azerbaijanâ€™s territory. But the gunmenâ€™s plan failed as they met Azerbaijani border guards in the territory â€œThree Pointsâ€ in the mountains of Gubek, which are considered the borders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. An Austrian passport was found on one of the members of the gang during the armed incident between the gunmen and border guards. One of the members of the gang arrested a few days later was the citizen of Austria, one of France and one of Russia. The other four members of the gang are being searched. Moreover, it is being investigated for what purposes the gunmen crossed Pankisi gorge of Georgia.

It should be noted that Azerbaijani border guards prevented trespassing attempt by the armed group of 6-7 at about 03.00 on July 16, 2009 in the territory of Zagatala Border Guard Unit of the Azerbaijan State Border Service near the state borders of Azerbaijan with Russia in direction of Mahamalar village of Balakan region. The trespassers fired on the border guards and wounded soldier Isayev Bahruz Asgar. One of the trespassers was killed with reprisal fire and one wounded. An Austrian passport was found in the bag of killed trespasser. Other members of the group could escape because of darkness and mountainous and forestry geography.

The General Prosecutorâ€™s Office launched a criminal case under article 120 (deliberate murder), 228 (illegal purchase, transfer, selling, storage, transportation and carrying of fire-arms, accessories to it, supplies, explosives), 318 (illegal crossing border of the Azerbaijan Republic) of the Criminal Code.
