Gunman killed on Azerbaijan-Russia borders identified â€“ <font color=red>EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS</font>

A gunman killed during a shooting between Azerbaijani border guards and trespassers in Goubek Mountains in the territory of Balakan region of Azerbaijan on borders with Russia at about 03.00 on July 16 was identified. An Austrian passport, ammunition, map and food provisions were found in his bag. The medical experts identified that he was a Muslim. His name was shown as Salman Umdayev in his passport. The experts are investigating now his document.

According to first versions, the organized armed group tried to cross Azerbaijani borders to escape from the anti-terror operations in the North Caucasus and Dagestan, but there are other versions too.

Police strengthened security measures in the regions of Zagatala and Balakan. Three of the gunmen escaped in direction of Russia after the shooting and two stayed in Azerbaijani side. Operational searches are continued for their detention.

Azerbaijani border guards prevented trespassing attempt by the armed group of 6-7 at about 03.00 on July 16, 2009 in the territory of Zagatala Border Guard Unit of the Azerbaijan State Border Service near the state borders of Azerbaijan with Russia in direction of Mahamalar village of Balakan region. The General Prosecutorâ€™s Office launched a criminal case under article 120 (deliberate murder), 228 (illegal purchase, transfer, selling, storage, transportation and carrying of fire-arms, accessories to it, supplies, explosives), 318 (illegal crossing border of the Azerbaijan Republic) of the Criminal Code.
