Elmira Suleymanova issues statement on May 8 – the day of occupation of Shusha

Baku – APA. Human Rights Commissioner of Azerbaijan Elmira Suleymanova issued a statement on May 8, the day of occupation of Shusha, press service of the Commissioner Office told APA. 17 years have passed since the occupation of Shusha, the cradle of Azerbaijani culture, the Commissioner said in her statement. The occupation of Shusha was a part of Armenia’s aggressive policy against Azerbaijan and violation of international law. “The city of Shusha, occupied by Armenian armed forces on May 8, 1992, is an integral part of Azerbaijan and a cradle of Azerbaijani culture. 24 900 population lived in 289 square km of territory of Shusha in that time. During the occupation, 193 people became martyrs and 102 became the disabled people. The Armenian invaders destroyed and burned 27 industrial and construction, 103 cultural and popular facilities, 31 towns, settlements and villages, 249 historic monuments and museums, 17 historic monuments. The Armenian nationalists demonstrated indifference to the international law and conducted archeological excavations in the Bronze Age graves around Shusha”.
The Human Rights Commissioner stated that violation of territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, occupation of the lands, destruction and misappropriation of the historic and cultural resources, violation of human rights by Armenian Republic and Armenian nationalists is contradictory to the norms and principles of international law. “We believe that long-term Armenian aggression and terrorist policy against Azerbaijan, mass violation of human rights will be ended, the international community and relevant international organizations will support the peaceful solution to the conflict, liberation of occupied territories, returning the refugees and displaced persons to their homeland and restoration of their rights”.
The statement was sent to the UN Secretary General, UN Human Rights Commissioner, OSCE, the Council of Europe, International and European Ombudsman Institutes, Asian Ombudsmen Associations, International Peace Bureau, Universal Peace Federation, ombudsmen of various countries, diplomatic missions and Diaspora organizations of Azerbaijan abroad, the foreign embassies in Azerbaijan.
