Penitentiary Service released about 2400 prisoners in connection with implementation of amnesty

Baku. Ramil Mammadli â€“ APA. Penitentiary Service has released about 2400 prisoners in connection with the implementation of the amnesty, APA reports. Deputy chief of Justice Ministryâ€™s Penitentiary Service Huseyn Alikhanov said that the prisoners, whose imprisonment would expire in 6 months, had already been released.
â€œAbout 1400 prisoners were released from detention stations. Act of amnesty was also applied to some prisoners arrested for using drugs. The act of amnesty will be applied to 20 prisoners suffering from drug addiction soon. They will be released under the decision of the court. The act of amnesty will be applied only to the drug addicted prisoners, whose term of treatment has expired,â€ he said.

The draft law on â€œDeclaring amnesty in connection with Novruz holidayâ€ submitted by MP Mehriban Aliyeva was adopted in the parliament on March 17. The act of amnesty will be implemented within four months. The act of amnesty will be applied to the persons posing no public threat, women imprisoned for less grievous crime, persons, who committed crime under 18, disabled people of the 1st and 2nd group, men reached 60, persons having underage children and disabled children of the 1st and 2nd group.

Moreover, the act of amnesty will be applied to the women, whose imprisonment will expire within a year and men, whose imprisonment will expire within six months, women, whose custodial restraint will expire within 2 years and men, whose custodial restraint will expire within a year, all persons sentenced to correctional labor, persons sentenced to fine punishment, persons, who got suspended sentence.

The amnesty will be applicable to approximately 9000 people, 1700 of them will be released.
