This deal will reduce Europe’s dependency on any one supplier or system of transit,” said Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland William Hague, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan, at his press conference dedicated to the Final Investment Decision for the Shah Deniz 2 Project, APA reports.

He said that this deal today is particularly excellent news for the UK and BP: “We already have over 300 British firms and over 3000 Brits working in Azerbaijan. This deal also represents our commitment to further strengthening our economic and political relationship with Azerbaijan and I look forward to our bilateral relationship going from strengthen to strengthen in the coming years.”

William Hague also mentioned that during the visit, he also met with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov: “I had productive discussion with the President Aliyev. We discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and I welcomed President Aliyev’s recent meeting with his Armenian counterpart in Vienna last month. At the meeting with Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, we discussed UK-Azerbaijan cooperation.

Hague also expressed his concern over the arrest of Anar Mammadli, the chairman of Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center.
