Sergei Lavrov: "There is a progress in the development of the draft convention on the status of the Caspian Sea"

It is time to specify cooperation directions envisaged in the agreements previously signed and that are being developed,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov addressing the 34th meeting of Working Group on the convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea at the level of deputy foreign ministers in Moscow, APA reports quoting RIA Novosti.

Lavrov said that the previous meeting was held in Moscow in July 2011 and it is pleasing that negotiation process was continued intensively within this period: “We believe that the work on the draft convention isn’t bad.”

The Minister said that new protocols of Tehran Convention on the environmental protection of the Caspian Sea, agreements on hydrometeorology, protection and rational use of biological resources of the Caspian Sea, emergency warning and elimination of their consequences are at the final stage of development.

“The ratification of the agreement on the cooperation on security in the Caspian Sea signed in 2010 is at the final stage. This offers good opportunities for all of us to struggle against threats more efficiently. We consider that we should complete the process of ratification and start preparing protocols specifying various directions of cooperation,” he said.
