Event titled “Human rights in Azerbaijan: “problems and prospects” held

Baku. Anakhanum Idoyatova – APA. The British Embassy in Azerbaijan held an event titled “Human rights in Azerbaijan: “problems and prospects” dedicated to the International Human Rights Day, APA reports.

Addressing the event, British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Irfan Siddiq said no country is perfect: “Every country needs to improve some spheres. Great Britain believes that all governments and societies should be transparent and open for criticism, human rights and freedoms should be ensured.”

The ambassador also stressed the importance of the fight against corruption.

U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission to Azerbaijan Dereck Hogan said that every man is free and has rights: “A man can use his or her rights regardless of race, sex, ethnicity and cultural differences.”

Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižnieks kept in touch with the event through Skype.

The event was also attended by representatives of the embassies of Norway, Sweden, Germany and other countries.
