Azerbaijan-Iran political consultations held in Baku

Baku-APA. Political consultations between the foreign ministries of Azerbaijan and Iran were held in Baku.

Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's press service told APA that the Azerbaijani delegation was led by Deputy Minister Khalaf Khalafov and Iranian delegation by Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Rahimpour.

Khalaf Khalafov said Baku visit of the Iranian Deputy Minister is important in terms of the development of Azerbaijan-Iran relations. Noting that Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the relations with Iran, Khalafov said there is broad potential to improve relations in economy, commerce, transport, communication, energy, tourism and humanitarian spheres.

Khalaf Khalafov underlined the importance of high-level visits between Azerbaijan and Iran. Noting that dialogue is regularly held on various levels, Deputy Minister underlined the importance of the relations between the two countries in terms of stability and security in the region, said mutual activity within the international organizations is efficient.

Touching on Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Khalaf Khalafov said the occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani territories, including 132km of Azerbaijan-Iran state border by Armenian Armed Forces is the major obstacle to peace and security, sustainable economic development in the region. Deputy Minister underlined that due to its aggressive policy Armenia is isolated from the large-scale projects implemented in the region, the occupied and uncontrolled territories of Azerbaijan are major source of danger for the region. Khalaf Khalafov said the world community, especially the states of the region should exert influence Armenia.

Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran Ebrahim Rahimpour expressed his satisfaction with the visit to Azerbaijan. The diplomat said Azerbaijan is an important partner of Iran, stressed that they are interested in the development of cooperation with Azerbaijan on the regional and international level. Noting that Azerbaijan is pursuing foreign policy in line with the ongoing processes in the world, Ebrahim Rahimpour said our country has developed much in the past 22 years.

The sides exchanged views on other international and regional issues of mutual interest.
