He said that there are good friendly relations between Iran and Azerbaijan and these relations have been expanded in the recent years: “Relations between the two countries are being developed in political, economic, social, cultural, humanitarian, religious and other fields. 25-member delegation of Iranian businessmen visited Baku on December 16-19 last year. The next meeting of Azerbaijan-Iran Intergovernmental Commission will be held in Baku in February, 2014. The meeting will focus on economic cooperation, trade and humanitarian fields. Memorandums are expected to be signed during the meeting.”
Akhundov said that the two countries are also cooperating in cultural spheres: “In May, 2014, a Week of Azerbaijani Culture will take place in Iran. We are going to introduce the cultural, artistic and tourism potential of Azerbaijan. At the same time, we plan to hold exhibitions in Tehran, Tabriz, Isfahan, Ardabil, Shiraz and other cities of Iran.”
The ambassador stressed that despite the development of mutual ties, there is a great potential for further development of cooperation: “For example, we are not satisfied with the economic cooperation between the two countries. We must try to improve this sphere. In this regard, an effort can be made to strengthen economic ties between Iran and Azerbaijan within Tehran-based Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). During Azerbaijan’s Chairmanship of the ECO Ministerial Council (2012-2013), I presided over the Council of Permanent Representatives of ECO member countries and made efforts to develop the relations. In this case, one of the topics of discussion was the establishment of the integrated transport system between the member countries. The construction of railway and international highways will contribute to developing economic ties.”
