Kiev. Viktoria Dementeva - APA. The 20th meeting of OSCE Ministerial Council starts in Kiev today. APA’s correspondent reports from Kiev that the delegations of 57 member states and partner states are arriving in the International Exhibition Center.
A group of activists are picketing outside the building holding posters “Stop dictatorship”, “Release innocent detainees”. The law-enforcement do not prevent the picket.
The ministers will discuss the outcomes of Ukraine's chairmanship of the OSCE this year, as well as outline the prospects for further cooperation and development. Moreover, development of the initiative " Helsinki 40 ", settlement of the protracted conflicts in the OSCE area , deepening cooperation in the field of arms control and non-proliferation, preventing the negative impact of energy on the environment , increased efforts of the international community to combat human trafficking will also be discussed at the meeting.
Other urgent topics are the rule of law, fundamental rights and freedoms, protection of the journalists’ rights, fight against transnational threats.
Switzerland will take over OSCE chairmanship on January 1, 2014.
