Council of Parliamentary Union of Organization of Islamic Conference member states call to recognize Khojaly tragedy as crime against humanity â€“ UPDATED

The 13th session of the Council of PUOIC was held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Azerbaijani delegation led by OIC Youth Forum Secretary General Elshad Isgandarov attended the Council meeting to adopt special resolution on cooperation between the two organizations.

Isgandarov said PUOIC member countries adopted the Abu Dhabi Declaration calling to recognize Khojaly tragedy as a mass crime against humanity as a result of approval of the resolution on cooperation between OIC Youth Forum and PUOIC. The 3rd point of the resolution reads that, the PU OIC parliaments recognize the massacre by Armenian armed forces against Azerbaijani peaceful population in Khojaly town of Azerbaijan Republic as a mass crime against humanity. In addition, inter-parliamentary platform urged the member-states to assess this crime on the national level.

OIC Youth Forum Secretary General explained the significance of the document: â€œPUOIC speakersâ€™ conference gave principal assessment to the tragedy as a crime against humanity. Yerevan said that time that the speakers are not diplomats and they donâ€™t look what they sign. Some OIC members have faced with pressure to abandon their positions. The Councilâ€™s recognition of Khojaly tragedy as a crime against humanity in its resolution shows OIC principal position on this issue and switches the process of political recognition of the tragedy into the practice planeâ€.

Justice for Khojaly International Awareness Campaign initiated by Leila Aliyeva, Senior Coordinator of the Islamic Conference Youth Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation on Cross-Culture Dialogue was started on May 8, 2008, on the day of occupation of Shusha town of Azerbaijan by Armenians. The campaign aims to deliver true information about the Khojaly tragedy to the world and to achieve the worldâ€™s legal, political and moral assessment to the event. PUOIC unites parliaments of 51 OIC member countries and holds annual Council sessions and biennial Conference session in one of the African, Asian or Arab countries.
