Washington. Isabel Levine – APA. The recent agreement signed between Azerbaijan, Romania and Georgia in Baku was highly praised an Energy Summit in Washington DC, September 23rd, APA’s US correspondent reports.

The speaker analysts –Ariel Cohen from the Heritage Foundation and Svante Cornell, from Central Asia and Caucasus Institution pointed out that, Azerbaijan had no need in anybody already in its independent energy policy.

“Today’s markets are based on the seller, not the consumer. It depends on the countries themselves where they want to sell the energy resources”, Mr. Cornell mentioned.

He also pointed that Caspian basin countries, in particular Azerbaijan, are very important in terms of energy diversity in the region:

“The projects where the Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan as well as other countries participate, are not anti-Russia, they are just anti- monopoly. This is an objective policy”.

The participating Senators and other officials also talked about the role of the BTC project and the Trans-Caspian project in terms of diversifying energy security.

Another issue was the Caspian Sea’s ecological security and whether it is good or not to drill offshore. Many experts said that the bad experience in the Mexico Gulf that brought to a large tragedy, shouldn’t happen ever again, and therefore drilling at offshore oilfields such as Kashagan is unsafe until the scientists find safer way to do that.

The participants also discussed the possibilities to use the so called alternative energy resources, such as the energy of the sun, of the wind, etc.
