But the water area and air space in this territory has not been distributed yet. It should be the theme of the Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea that we are actively working on,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, APA reports quoting Praym-Nyus. Foreign Minister says since there are no final agreements, the USSR-Iran agreements signed in 1921 and 1940 are still effective.
“The main point making it urgent to sign the new Convention is that three new independent states have been existing on the Caspian Sea shore for 20 years. It is important to reach agreements that will meet the interests of all littoral states. Russia is ready for compromises, ready to admit the necessity of the existence of national sectors, on condition that freedom of navigation is not denied and fishing does not result in the depletion of the biological resources in the Caspian Sea,” he said.

Touching on the agreement on the security in the Caspian Sea, Lavrov says the preparation for the document will be completed soon, the agreement may be signed at the summit in Azerbaijan’s capital.
