Russia, Azerbaijan to sign state border agreement

“The main subject of upcoming visit will be signing a state border agreement and a treaty on the rational usage of the water resources of the Samur River. Both sides have worked on this important document over the recent years”.

He noted that Russia considers Azerbaijan to be an important strategic partner in the South Caucasus and the Caspian region, the relations between two countries develop in the upward direction: “They are multifaceted therefore traditionally two presidents discuss the full range of relations during their meetings. I am confident that the upcoming meeting won’t be exception. According to Lavrov, very good personal relationships between Presidents Medvedev and Aliyev are an important factor in promoting this partnership.

During the visit, issues related to the economic cooperation will be discussed. As Lavrov says, they are the foundation of the partnership, holding very important place in any summits as well as negotiations. The trade turnover between our countries, which declined due to the global crisis, is growing. There are good investment projects that are successfully implemented in industry, transport and banking sectors, FM noted. Both presidents will hold a fundamental review of the state in these spheres and if it’s necessary they will give them a political momentum.

The minister also mentioned that a new major project in the humanitarian sphere had been launched this year: Baku hosted a forum on the humanitarian-related issues, and it was decided to host such events each year under the patronage of two presidents. Since last year, a branch of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov has operated in the capital of Azerbaijan, and the Russian Centre for Science and Culture as well as the House of Russian books was opened.

Individually, more and more Russian regions partake in the collaboration. It all meets to the interest of both peoples and to the interests of strengthening the stability in the South Caucasus and the Caspian region, Lavrov is sure.

Besides the bilateral relations, the presidents will consider the regional and international issues, cooperation between two countries within international organizations both in Europe and in international arena, especially within the UN.
