WB to assess poverty level in Azerbaijan

Today in Baku WB country manager for Azerbaijan Larisa Leshchenko has stated that currently the Bank conducts its own analysis to be presented next year.

"Unfortunately, we use only official statistics, as it’s a pity that the government does not share with us the results of the analysis of households to determine the level of poverty. Following our own analysis, we can announce the poverty level in Azerbaijan according to WB estimates,” Leshchenko said.

She points out that with the purpose to continue reducing the poverty rate from 6% (current level according to official estimates) Azerbaijan should first create the conditions of decent work and decent wages, and improve social and pension system in order to improve the welfare of the unemployable part of the population.

Once, the WB became the initiator and donor of poverty reduction in the country, when 49% of the Azerbaijani population was behind the poverty line.
