Baku – APA. Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has decided to hold an extraordinary general assembly. The central governing body of the AKP has today made a relevant decision, APA reports citing Turkish sources. The decision was stated by the party’s spokesperson Hüseyn Çelik.
Hüseyn Çelik said that before the assembly which is scheduled for August 27, they will decide one person as the leader of the party and elect that person during the assembly: “One who will be elected will also become the Prime Minister”.
This statement from the AKP triggered a political uproar in Ankara. It is believed that this decision is aimed at preventing Abdullah Gül from becoming the leader of the AKP. Abdullah Gül’s term of office will end on August 28 and before this date he doesn’t have the right to return to the AKP and become its leader. Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan is said to be interested to have an influential politician like Abdullah Gül as the party’s leader and the Prime Minister. Turkish experts say ErdoÄŸan won’t act against him and wants a figure that agrees to remain under the president’s shadow to become the AKP’s leader and the Prime Minister. And Abdullah Gül who has his own way doesn’t fit this criterion.
