Baku_APA. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on Thursday called on the United Nations Security Council to hold an urgent meeting on Iraq after Islamist militants seized Iraq's largest Christian town, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"Given the seriousness of the situation -- the first victims of which are civilians and religious minorities -- France is requesting an urgent meeting of the Security Council," France's top diplomat said. "So the international community can mobilize to counter the terrorist threat in Iraq and support and protect the population at risk."

The minister said France "was deeply concerned" over "the intolerable abuses that are committed" in the Arab country where militants on Wednesday took the control of major towns of Talkif and Qaraqoush in southeastern of Mosul, forcing thousands of people to flee the conflicts.
