“He died at 12:00 today after a long illness”, his assistant Marina Davitashvili confirmed the fact. She did not give any further details.
Shevardnadze was born in Lanchkhuti, Georgia on 25 January 1928. He worked as the Minister of Public Order Maintenance of Georgian SSR, Minister of Internal Affairs, First Secretary of the Georgian Communist Party. He has been the member of the Soviet Political Bureau. He was awarded as a Hero of Socialist Labor. He worked as a Soviet Foreign Minister in a short period since 1991 (18 November – 8 December). Following the removal of Georgia’s first president, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, he headed the country firstly as a State Council Chairman, then as a Chairman of the Parliament. He was elected President in 1995. He resigned in autumn of 2003 as a result of the "Rose Revolution".
It is still unknown when Shevardnadze will be buried.
