It is necessary for Europe to enter into closer cooperation with the United States to deal with current security issues, despite divergent views, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday during a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, APA reports quoting Sputnik.

"We all share [the idea that] we need close cooperation with the United States on the issues of security given all the differences in opinions," Merkel said.

She added that Europe was unable to combat terrorism on its own and "should take control of its destiny."

Merkel underscored that during the G20 summit held in Hamburg last week, common approaches on the terror threat and other issues on the summit’s agenda were found and agreed upon with the US President Donald Trump.

Over the past two years, multiple terror attacks have struck the globe, including on such European cities as Paris, Brussels, Nice, Berlin, London and Stockholm. As a result of the increased threat, nations worldwide have been striving to step up their counterterrorism efforts by all available means, of which include the adoption of additional security measures and joining various international coalitions.
