MPs from the Republican People's Party (CHP) held a protest in the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, APA reports citing CNNTürk.
Ali Mahir Basharır, the vice-chairman of the CHP parliamentary group, reacted to the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu during his speech on current issues.
"I regret to inform you that this morning, a police convoy consisting of 20 vehicles came to the home of our Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality chairman. Our lawyers and MPs were not allowed to enter the house. Immediately after that, the metro lines on the European side of the city were canceled, and the internet became weak. I regret that these operations took place today," he said.
Basharir likened the events to a "coup d'état."
During his speech, other CHP MPs also took to the podium.
CHP MPs chanted slogans such as "Justice, law, rights" and "We will win by uniting."
Members of the DEM Party also stood up to support the CHP MPs.
Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, Sırrı Süreyya Önder, gave a 20-minute break to the session. However, since the CHP MPs did not leave the podium after the break, the session was postponed until the next day.
