The issue of introducing drug tests for lawmakers has been brought up for discussion in the French National Assembly, APA reports.

Lawmakers Francois Jolivet and Jean-Francois Rousset have appealed to National Assembly President Yael Braun-Pivet, proposing drug testing for members of parliament.

In his letter, Francois Jolivet, a member of the Horizons party, proposed that all National Assembly staff, including lawmakers, be subjected to unannounced and mandatory drug tests.

Jean-Francois Rousset, a member of the Ensemble pour la République group, requested a meeting with parliamentary leadership and proposed allowing lawmakers to undergo drug testing on a voluntary basis. He stated that the aim is not to target individuals, but to demonstrate parliament members' commitment to the principles of transparency and equality.

Rousset added that politicians should serve as role models for society and act more openly in order to preserve public trust.

The initiative emerged after French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu issued instructions introducing unannounced drug tests for ministers and senior civil servants. Under the directive, ministers and their staff are required to undergo saliva-based testing.

The issue has sparked broad debate within France’s public administration institutions.
