The Dutch government has announced that defense spending will increase in the 2026 budget to meet NATO-set targets, according to the government’s official website, APA reports.
The Netherlands aims to reach 2% of its Gross Domestic Product, as agreed at the NATO summit in The Hague, and will gradually increase military expenditures to achieve this goal.
“By 2026, defense spending will account for 2.2% of GDP. This amount also includes military aid provided to Ukraine,” the government said in a statement.
Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans wrote on social media that next year’s defense budget will rise by €3.4 billion to a total of €26.8 billion:
“This will allow us to enhance our combat capabilities: more equipment, more ammunition, and investment in our personnel.”
The European Defence Agency forecasts that defense spending by European Union countries will reach a record €381 billion in 2025.
