Ekrem Imamoglu, the head of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), and his press secretary Murat Ongun have been detained, APA reports citing NTV.
Reason for Detention
It is reported that Imamoglu was detained as part of an investigation that began within the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. A search was conducted at Imamoglu's house, and he was later taken for a medical examination.
More than 100 people have reportedly been detained in total. The information states that the prosecution is conducting two separate investigations. In the first investigation, Imamoglu and other suspects are accused of joint activities with the PKK, hiring PKK members, and in the second investigation, they are charged with corruption and bribery crimes.
Who is Ekrem Imamoglu?
Ekrem Imamoglu was born on June 4, 1970, in Trabzon, Turkiye. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business management from Istanbul University and a master's degree in human resource management. He served as the mayor of Beylikdüzü Municipality from 2014 to 2019. In 2019, he was elected as the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality as a candidate of the Republican People's Party (CHP).
