The Greek government does not intend to send troops to Ukraine to protect the Greek minority, such an issue is not being discussed, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis told reporters, commenting on the statements of a member of the Greek parliament from the ruling New Democracy party, renowned scientist Angelos Sirigos, APA reports.

Professor Syrigos, a specialist in Greek-Turkish relations, said that Greece has grounds to send troops to Ukraine, since, according to him, there is a Greek minority of 100,000 people in the region "where fighting is currently taking place between Russians and Ukrainians."

Journalists asked the government's press secretary whether Syrigos expressed the position of New Democracy when he spoke in favor of sending Greek troops to Ukraine.

"No, this is not the position of either New Democracy or the government. There is no such question," Marinakis replied.

"We want the negotiations to take place as soon as possible, so that peace reigns in the region, obviously with the participation of Ukraine, as stated by both the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The US and Ukraine's proposal for a 30-day ceasefire is a positive step. Russia must respond to it, and we hope that American and European efforts will lead to peace," he said.
