Duane Davis, 63, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the United States after being convicted of organising the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, CNN reports.

Under the sentence handed down by Judge Carli Kierny on October 13, Davis will be eligible to apply for parole after serving at least 40 years.

Parole eligibility does not guarantee his release, and he could remain in prison for the rest of his life. The 731 days he has already spent in custody will count towards his sentence.

A jury found Davis guilty of first-degree murder on August 31 after deliberating for less than three hours.

Prosecutors said Davis, a senior figure in the Southside Compton Crips gang, organised the attack in retaliation for a fight involving members of Shakur’s entourage and Davis’s nephew, Orlando Anderson, at the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas.

The prosecution did not allege that Davis personally fired the shots.

Shakur was shot while travelling in a car with music producer Marion Knight and died six days later, aged 25.

Davis’s own accounts played a significant role in the investigation of the killing, which remained unsolved for nearly three decades. He discussed his involvement in interviews, documentaries and podcasts, and published a memoir presenting his version of events in 2019.

Davis was the only person formally charged in connection with Shakur’s murder.
