As we reported, the United Kingdom is preparing to officially recognize the state of Palestine, APA reports, citing Al Jazeera.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to make the announcement on Sunday, two days before the start of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which will focus on the issue of Palestinian sovereignty.
The Israeli government has criticized Britain's allies and the more than 75 percent of UN member states that formally recognize Palestinian sovereignty, claiming their position "rewards terror."
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said she supports a two-state solution in the region, but stressed that she wants to act in full coordination with Israel and its iron-fisted military, financial, and political backer, the United States.
“It seems obvious, and the US has made it clear, that the hostages have not been released and that recognizing a Palestinian state in the current situation would be tantamount to rewarding terrorism,” Badenoch wrote in The Telegraph over the weekend.
US President Donald Trump voiced his opposition to the recognition issue during a state visit to the UK and a meeting with Starmer last week.
