Azerbaijani and Turkish citizens have been detained in the occupied Abkhazia region of Georgia, “Echo of the Caucasus” released information citing the so-called “State Security Service” of the breakaway entity, APA’s Tbilisi correspondent reports.

It was stated that the “SSS,” together with the Border Department of the Russian FSB, discovered a “channel for illegal border crossing” in the Gali district of Abkhazia and detained two groups of foreign citizens.

According to the information, the detained Turkish citizens are 1997-born Selcuk Guren, who was previously wanted internationally through Interpol for contract killings, and 2001-born Dogan Bersan, who is wanted for murder as well as drug trafficking.

The Azerbaijani citizens are Hasan Etibar Azizov, born in 1974, and Namaz Tahmaz Tahmazli, born in 1990. According to the “SSS,” the Azerbaijani citizens attempted to hide in the territory of Abkhazia to evade criminal responsibility in Georgia.

“Unlike the Azerbaijani citizens, the State Security Service has not clarified where and for what purpose the detained Turkish citizens were sent,” the statement noted.

It was also mentioned that a “criminal case” has been opened against the detained individuals by the “Investigation Department of the State Security Service,” and the case carries a penalty of imprisonment ranging from 2 to 5 years.
